Russia Releases US Citizen Stephen Hubbard During Witkoff Visit to Moscow
Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired American schoolteacher held in Russia since his capture in occupied Ukraine in 2022, has been released from prison, announced by President Trump and reported through 21 October 2026. The release occurred during a visit to Moscow by US envoy Steve Witkoff, who met President Putin; the Kremlin stated the decision was Putin's and was taken on humanitarian grounds. Major wire services and broadcasters reported the release separately, but all accounts are second-hand relays of statements by US and Russian officials.
NOT ESTABLISHED
- No imagery or video of Hubbard's release or transfer has been observed.
- Hubbard's current location, custody status and whether he has departed Russian territory are not stated in the collected reporting.
- No full text of an official Kremlin statement or US government statement was collected; the Kremlin and Witkoff quotes come from a single social media relay account that cannot be independently vouched for.
- The date, time and place of the release are not specified in the collected reporting.
- Whether any conditions, exchanges or other persons were involved is not established; Trump's statement that there was no swap is carried by one outlet and is uncorroborated in the collected reporting.
- No first-hand account from Hubbard, his family or legal representatives is present in the collection.
- Most observations are headline-level only; article bodies were not available for cross-checking details such as the charge, sentence length and place of detention.
